The use of radiation as a terrorist weapon at one time was an unbelievable thought. The fact is, large quantities of radioactive material throughout the world is unaccounted for.
In addition, many former Soviet Union atomic weapons scientists’ whereabouts are unknown. There are individuals working with terrorist organizations such as Jose Padilla (also known as Abdullah al-Muhajir), the 31-year-old American, is suspected of plotting a dirty bomb attack on the United States. Padilla, a Brooklyn-born man, was seized by FBI agents at O’Hair Airport in Chicago as he returned to the United States from a lengthy stay overseas.
Radiation terrorism is a real possibility in today’s world. As a radiologic technologist (Radiation Provisional) you will be seen by health care as someone they will turn to in a radiation emergency event weather you want to or not. You already understand radiation biology, but you also need more information to have the potential to save patient lives and also to protect your own.
As a radiation professional, or for that matter any healthcare professional, should a radiation event occur it will too late then to receive training.
